MARSOC: U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations Command

In 2006, the U.S. Marines officially became part of the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) with the creation of the Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). Drawn from the ranks of the Force Recon companies, these highly skilled and combat-proven Leathernecks would take the war to al Qaeda and the Taliban in America’s global war on terrorism. MARSOC is steeped in the heritage of the Marine Raiders of World War II, Force Reconnaissance companies of Vietnam, and Detachment-One, which stood up after the attacks on 9/11. Their mission is to win wars before they begin, taking the warfare beyond the front line. When America wants to display its might, the Commander in Chief will send in the Marines. With the creation of MARSOC, chances are they are already there.

The United States Marine Corps has a rich tradition of special operations, from World War II’s famed Marine Raiders and Para Marines to Korea and Vietnam’s legendary Marine Force Recon companies. Indeed, when Navy underwater demolition teams, the direct predecessors to the SEALs, performed the preinvasion reconnaissance of Iwo Jima, recon Marines were part of the mission. But when U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) was created in 1987 in the wake of the abortive Desert One hostage rescue mission, the Marines did not join in. Spec ops on land, sea, and air were covered by the Army, Navy, and Air Force; the Corps felt it needed to keep its top warriors with its conventional forces.

In the post-9/11 world, however, the need for special operations forces dramatically increased. With the creation of the Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) in 2006, Marines officially became part of USSOCOM. Initially drawn from the ranks of Force Recon companies, these highly skilled and combat-proven Leathernecks joined their spec ops brethren in taking the war to al-Qaeda and the Taliban in America’s global war on terrorism.

MARSOC’s mission is to win wars before they begin, taking combat beyond the frontlines. When America needs to respond to aggression in distant lands, the call comes to send in the Marines. With the creation of MARSOC, chances are special operations Marines are already there.

About the Author
BARRY JASON STEIN, former owner of a major military insignia manufacturing company, became interested in military history while he was a young salesman traveling to military bases around the world. His sales initiatives in the field of insignia include the well-known Sta-Brite brand of no-polish insignia which he introduced to the Army PX system in 1989. Stein was born May 22nd, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, before embarking on a career in sales and manufacturing where he spent over 38 years. Stein is the noted author of U.S. Army Heraldic Crests the standard reference for distinctive unit insignia collectors around the world and the book which General Matthew Ridgeway once praised as unique in both scope and content [representing] in a symbolic sense, the entire sweep of U.S. Army history. His second book U.S. Army Patches (1997), was the predecessor to his latest endeavor, U.S. Army Patches, Flashes and Ovals which he hopes will do for patch enthusiasts what his first book did for crest collectors. Great patch book focused only on World War II. Depicts hundreds of SSIs (patches), tabs and scrolls, as well as chevrons, including SSI reproductions for comparative purposes. Learning how to defeat the reproduction cheats alone is well worth reading.

As a novice World War II patch collector, I found this book to be very informative. It has good descriptions of the major patches that the collector will encounter, along with estimated prices for both common and uncommon variations. The book also has very useful information on how to spot post-World War II patches. I highly recommend this book for the beginning patch collector.

LockettAs a passionate collector of US Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of WWII for 20 years I find this book to be of value to all people who have an interest in our hobby whether novice or long time collectors. To encapsulate the very basic and understanding of collecting, manufacturing , pricing , terms , experiance, etc.., documenting and putting it into print using personal experiance adds value that all collectors would like to do with their patch collection. As with all printed matter there will always be critiscism of either errors or not enough information. I find this book to have a wealth of information that is well documented , researched and is an excellent guide to go by, especially for the novice and also experiance collecter alike-you cannot please every body all the time but you can please a lot of people most of the time. My only question mark are the quality of the photos , a more sharper photo would show the intricate weave better but if this is the only "?" this book stands in good order and is a must for the collector. I commend the author and would like to see more from Christopher P Brown.
